5 Necessary Mindset Shifts for Successful Digital Nomads

Running a successful digital nomad business requires some skills, knowledge, passion, and most of all MINDSET. If you can control your mind and the emotional rollercoaster of being your own boss, you are well on your way to being successful.

These are the mindset shifts I constantly feel are the key to my success and you can start working on these today.

Believing it’s possible & believing in yourself.

The first shift you need to make to be successful is believing it’s possible. Believing through all of the obstacles, circumstances, and struggles that you will find a way to make it happen is 100% necessary.

In fact, why can’t you do it? What are you telling yourself that is limiting you from believing it’s possible? Are there old stories you keep telling yourself that hold you back?

I constantly had to revisit this mindset shift when things weren't going very well in my business. There are a lot of lessons that I went through and of course I would go through times where I didn't believe in myself. But I quickly remembered and reminded myself that I can control my destiny and that my circumstances were only placed in front of me to help me grow. If I had given up and stopped believing I could make it happen when things went sour, I would have quit my business a long time ago.

How to start believing in yourself

Look for others who are where you want to be. Look for people who are a few steps ahead of you and see how they got to where they are today. Stop making excuses for why you can’t start your own business and travel the world and start taking the steps to get there. In order to make it happen, you need to believe it’s possible and believe you can do it.

It’s coming to you.

After you believe it’s possible, you need to believe it’s coming. No matter where you are on your journey, believe that if you continue to follow that path you will reach the success you envision for yourself.

How to start believing it’s coming

I’m going to bring up something you might find to be a bunch of BS, but I believe it is true and it’s changed my life. That is law of attraction. What you think and believe is what you attract into your life. If you think you’re broke, you’ll always be broke. If you think you can’t do it, you never will.

And don’t think law of attraction means just thinking of something and bam, it appears in your life. You still have to take action to show the universe you mean serious business. You can’t just expect things to come to you without doing any of the work.

Believe it’s coming to you and take the required steps to make it happen.

Make it a priority

When you are your own boss and the only one holding you accountable, you have to make your business a priority. Even if you are currently working at another job, you need to find time in your day to take small steps towards making your dream a reality.

There are plenty of times where things came up and I put my projects on the back burner, so creating a schedule for myself or setting a time each day where I work on certain projects has helped me grow my business. For example, to keep our blog consistent, I dedicate one day per month solely to writing all of my blog posts for the following month. That way I can focus on other tasks during that month instead of trying to come up with blog posts at the last minute.

I make sure to prioritize these blog posts ahead of time because I know they will help our business and give our audience so much value.

How to make it a priority

If you’re working at a 9-5 job and you don’t have much time to work on your business, think about your goals. Are you more committed to your comfort zone at your job? Or are you more committed to making your dreams a reality?

Even though you may be tired or you may not have time, you’re going to have to make it a priority in order to be successful. You can’t put it off and expect to see results!

You also can redefine your 9-5 when you are a full time digital nomad. Instead of working 9-5 you can work 12-6 or 5-8. Whichever you choose! You will still have to make that commitment of prioritizing your work days, and even when you have a choice it’s good to have a routine.

Kick insecurity, fear, and doubt’s ass

Oftentimes when starting your own business, you’ll feel like you have no idea what you are doing which will lead to feeling insecure and doubting your abilities. This will only hinder your growth, so embrace the fact that you are learning. You are able. You can do this. You can get there day by day, one step at a time.

Acknowledge the fear that arises within you, but tell it to take a seat because you’re about to kick ass and make a big difference in your life.

How to kick insecurity, fear and doubt’s ass

  • Know that you are not alone.

  • Don’t worry about what others think.

  • Set small achievable goals and break larger goals into smaller steps.

  • Celebrate your achievements, even when they are small.

  • Surround yourself with the right people.

Eliminate those limiting beliefs

Limiting beliefs are things you believe to be true about yourself, others, or the world that limit you in some way. These beliefs may hold you back from going after your dreams, taking chances, and blind you from opportunities that come into your life. These limiting beliefs keep you STUCK.

Here are a few limiting beliefs that I have broken through:

  • I’m not a morning person

  • I’m not good at networking or meeting new people

  • I can’t edit videos because I don’t know how

  • I’m not good on camera

  • I’m not great at speaking so I shouldn’t do live videos or create e-courses

These limiting beliefs are thoughts that I have created based on a story I had been telling myself. For example, I used to tell myself I was not good on camera because one time someone commented on how I was awkward and shy. I held that story and believed it to be true for so long and it prevented me from starting my YouTube channel and creating videos. It wasn't until I realized that the comment about how I am shy and awkward was only something that someone else said and not the actual truth. It was holding me back and I realized I have the choice to believe something else or to ignore other people’s comments about me.

Here are a few common limiting beliefs that may be holding you back:

  • Others’ opinions of me are more important than my opinion of myself.

  • I’m not very interesting, funny, pretty, etc..

  • Money is hard to come by and easy to lose.

  • Work is supposed to be boring and miserable.

  • No one actually enjoys their job.

  • Only lucky people are successful, and I’m not lucky.

  • I don’t have time.

  • It’s too late for me to change.

  • I’m too old to do ____.

  • I don’t know where to start.

  • I’m not popular enough.

  • My health is holding me back.

  • Someday I’ll be happy and healthy.

  • I don’t deserve nice things.

  • I’ll always be broke and struggling.

  • I’ll always be in debt.

  • I don’t have enough experience.

How to eliminate limiting beliefs

Figure out what those stories are that you are telling yourself.

Try to think about the thoughts that are holding you back from accomplishing your goals. What do you want to accomplish? What is preventing you from getting there? Why are you telling yourself those limiting beliefs? Take some time to figure out what those stories are and then try to rewrite that story into something better and more positive.

Limiting beliefs can be a challenging thing to work through because most of them are subconscious thoughts and a lot of the time it can be difficult to recognize that these beliefs are holding us back.

Invest in yourself.

If you find yourself feeling like you have no skills or you’ve been in a negative state of mind, invest in yourself. Grab courses that will enhance your skill set, get a life coach that will help you get through some of your blocks, or work on your self confidence. Investing in yourself is the best thing you can do for your business success. If something is holding you back, don’t be afraid to ask for help!

Mindset shifts can be difficult to spot and challenging to change! As soon as you realize your own thoughts and beliefs are the ones holding you back, you will be able to work through those challenges with ease and come out on the top!
