10 Things To Do When Feeling Overwhelmed

Right when I woke up this morning my brain was all over the place. I walked around my house drinking my iced coffee that Cody made for me, and thought “ugh, I have SO MUCH TO DO, but I don't even know where to begin.” Often times when there are so many things on our to-do list, we tend to just end up not doing ANYTHING at all, I think its a case of the ihavesomuchtodobutilltakeanapinstead's. That was the case for me. I avoided all tasks I have on my list because there are simply too many tasks. What the heck do we do? Instead of giving up and binge watching Bob’s Burgers all day, here are 10 things you can do to get back on track!

WRITE DOWN THE TOP 3 MOST IMPORTANT THINGS YOU CAN DO TODAY.

This is something that really helps all planners, and something you see as an action item in every planner. I personally love and use the Get To Work Book. Writing down every single task that we can think of ultimately ends up being too much for anyone to accomplish and leads us to not knowing where to start and heading on over to Instagram to procrastinate. By writing the top three most important tasks, we can then focus on finishing those before thinking about finishing everything! Sounds a lot easier to me.

GO FOR A WALK.

This is something I do all the time. Ill start feeling like i’ve been staring at the screen too long, my eyes will go crossed a little, and i'll begin feeling unmotivated and start browsing Pinterest, when all reality I should be working because thats why i'm stressed and overwhelmed in the first place. Taking a walk is surprisingly great for refreshing, regaining inspiration, and gaining some clarity on what you really should be doing. I always believe that taking a step back and enjoying the park down the street and grabbing a coffee is the best way to procrastinate. Much better than reading Facebook statuses about what they had for lunch.

EXERCISE.

This is similar to going for a walk, but im talking about something a tad more strenuous. When you are overwhelmed or stressed with your large list of things you have to get done, the best thing you can do is go for a run, head to the gym, or check out some local classes. Exercise will give you a boost of creativity, inspiration, and also make you feel better about yourself overall. I think of the BEST ideas on my runs, and come back home to write them down. Exercising daily also benefits you by giving you more energy overall to accomplish all those things you've got to get done. So, get off your booty and do some jumping jacks!

BRAIN DUMP ALL OF YOUR IDEAS ONTO A PIECE OF PAPER.

Get it all out. All of it! Every single thing you are thinking of or have to do or idea you have just write it all down in a massive brain dump. That way instead of letting all these things crowd your mind you can have them written down for you to reference later. Leaving more room for you to focus on your top three tasks to get done today like I mentioned earlier. Sometimes if you have too much on your mind, and you are a worry wart like me..it helps to write every thought down and then throw it away! Bye bye worrisome thoughts, lets move on to being positive and getting shit done!

STEP AWAY FROM SOCIAL MEDIA.

Ah, the buzz of social media and constant business of other businesses, freelancers, bloggers, and so on. Social media is a great tool for our businesses, but when we are in a rut like feeling overwhelmed with getting things done, we need to step away from checking how busy others are and focus on ourselves. Turn off notifications for a day or two and avoid checking social media until you are out of office. There are also so many apps out there that block you from visiting certain websites. I think that's pretty great for my lack of self control :-D

JUST START ONE TASK AND WORK ON IT FOR 30 MINUTES.

The hardest part is always starting, so just START. Pick one of your top three tasks and start it now and tell yourself you are only going to work on it for 30 minutes. Most of the time i’ll end up finishing it because after a few minutes of working on it I get into it! I believe this is called the Pomodoro method, but usually I just start a timer on my phone and do work.

ORGANIZE YOUR TASKS BY PRIORITY.

If you have a long list of things to get done today use color coding or order them by number to see which tasks are #1 absolutely need to get done, and which ones can wait til' later. Its good to prioritize which things need your attention most. Like its probably more important to post your blog post, than it is to pin things on Pinterest. Or its more important for you to work with your current clients than it is to onboard new ones.

CELEBRATE SMALL MILESTONES.

Maybe you finished writing that blog post, or sent out that client email. A good way to inspire you to complete more tasks is to celebrate completing them! Even the small ones. Maybe you can post to twitter an exciting update about getting things done, or eat a piece of candy. Go out to lunch at your favorite cafe on your lunch break, or even just simply give yourself a pat on the back and tell yourself that you are amazing. Go you!

TAKE A BREAK AND START OVER TOMORROW.

When all else fails, simply just take a break and start over tomorrow. Binge on those netflix shows, bake cookies, or go shopping. Sometimes that is just your body telling you to chill out and that you need some R&R. Don't feel guilty for taking care of yourself! You just need to let yourself truly have a break and come back the next day with a refreshed mind and a blank slate!

Well, there you have it pals! My favorite ways to get things done when I am overwhelmed with so many things buzzing around in my head. Are there any ways that you use that I haven't listed yet?
